Rating for Carmel 3

Deliciously Crispy

Sound Quality

93/100

Build Quality

96/100

Value for Money

88/100

The Carmel 3 packs authoritative bass, vivid midrange presence and laser-focused imaging into a slim sealed tower. What Hi-Fi? admired its compact-scale dynamic clout, while SoundStage Solo found its airy, detailed treble and lifelike resolution exceptional. Immaculate machined-aluminium construction and cohesive driver integration complete a thrillingly precise high-end package.

Pros

Remarkably forceful, controlled bass and dynamic punch for such a slim two-way floorstander.

Exceptionally vivid, detailed midrange and extended treble, with realistic cymbals and strong resistance to harshness.

Precisely locked-in imaging and an expansive, dimensional soundstage.

Immaculately machined, highly rigid aluminium cabinets with premium finish quality.

Cons

Highly revealing nature can spotlight flaws in poor recordings and less capable source components.

Performs best with ample amplifier power; low-powered amplification can sound congested at higher volumes.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"These little 2-way wonders presented one of the most vivid, lifelike, and present mids and highs I’ve heard in my room."

— SoundStage Solo

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 93/100

The Carmel 3 is repeatedly praised for its unusually full, forceful sound from a compact two-way tower, combining strong low-end authority with exceptional resolution and coherence. Its presentation is highly revealing and source-dependent, however: poorer recordings can sound hard or exposed, and careful setup, warm-up, and suitably capable amplification are important.

Bass

94/100

Reviewers found the low end remarkably muscular for such a slim speaker. What Hi-Fi heard surprising punch, reach and dynamic clout, while StereoNET praised big, bouncy bass and robust sub-bass synths; Part-Time Audiophile found no meaningful deep-bass shortfall against much larger speakers. Placement matters, as moving the speakers too close to the rear wall made the bass warmer but eventually too thick.

Mid

94/100

The midrange is a major strength, described as vivid, lifelike, immediate and highly resolved. Reviewers heard substantial, textured voices and fine instrumental information, from piano mechanics and breathing to the grain and passion in Nick Cave's vocal performance. Its honesty can be stark with rougher recordings rather than smoothing them over.

Treble

92/100

The Lattice tweeter earned strong praise for realistic cymbals and bells, air, extension, and access to fine recorded detail without habitual harshness or excessive forwardness. At the same time, reviewers caution that the speaker's transparency can expose poor recordings, and What Hi-Fi found it hard and slightly edgy before proper warm-up.

Soundstage Imaging

91/100

Imaging is consistently described as exceptionally focused, locked-in and precise, with reviewers reporting an expansive soundfield across width, height and depth. Part-Time Audiophile called the imaging and soundstaging spectacular, and Audiophilepure found performers projected with unusually intimate presence. What Hi-Fi's reservation is that ultimate depth and openness fall a little short of its preference.

Dynamics

94/100

Despite its modest proportions, the Carmel 3 is repeatedly credited with authoritative punch, rhythmic drive and ease under demanding material. What Hi-Fi found it stress-free at high levels, while StereoNET praised its authority and dynamic range at both loud and low listening levels. One Audiophilepure review felt its rhythmic drive was more surefooted than overtly enthusiastic, but still found it shockingly punchy for its size.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

96/100

The machined aluminium enclosure, tight joint tolerances, immaculate finish and substantial rigidity receive unequivocal praise. StereoNET notes aluminium up to 35mm thick, internal bracing and damping, while SoundStage Solo highlights the high machining quality and exceptionally solid cabinet panels. Supplied spikes, protective pucks, quality terminals and a road case reinforce the sense of carefully executed premium engineering.

Value for Money

88/100

At $29,800, the Carmel 3 is unmistakably expensive, and custom finishes can add a substantial further premium. Still, Part-Time Audiophile judged it worth every penny given how much it accomplishes, and StereoNET felt its dynamics, tonal balance and soundstaging justified the cost. Compared with larger YG models, it retains much of the brand's focus and precision while conceding the very deepest bass.

Manufacturer's Description — YG Acoustics

Our Reference range demonstrates the very best that can be achieved in accuracy and musicality. We are honored that these models are some of the most awarded loudspeakers in the world.

They combine advanced materials with cutting edge science and engineering. They are designed without compromise, with the singular aim of transporting listeners into the heart of the music.

Carmel 3 delivers the highest accuracy and musicality possible from a compact two-channel loudspeaker. We have applied many of our technologies from the XV, Sonja and Hailey to a compact form factor that is compatible with any room. Carmel 3 throws a huge sound-stage with effortless detail. Incredible delicacy is combined with huge power and authority.

The Reference speakers are structured from high-grade aerospace aluminum, machined in-house to an incredible precision. They are meticulously hand-built by experts in our Colorado and Cambridge workshops.

The Reference 3 models include new technologies and design innovations based on novel theoretical models, detailed multi-domain simulations and thousands of hours of listening. The end result: loudspeakers which convey every nuance of emotion, each musical cue from the tiniest microdetail to the visceral impact of the most thunderous crescendo.

An entirely new, hybrid Lattice tweeter uses a novel airframe in a specially-selected aerospace alloy, machined by YG Acoustics. It delivers exceptionally low distortion over a huge bandwidth, with wide angular dispersion to support a large sweet-spot.

The 18 cm (7.25”) midbass driver uses an advanced motor with extremely powerful neodymium rare earth magnets, driving a YG proprietary aluminum cone to deliver industry-leading performance.

Groundbreaking, third-generation Ultracoherent crossovers apply a deep understanding from simulation to deliver performance never before possible.
