Wharfedale’s compact three-way standmount delivers warm, richly textured sound, surprising bass weight and an immersive soundstage that belies its size. David Price admired its poised, detailed balance, while Ed Selley found its dedicated dome midrange exceptionally cohesive and involving. Hand-veneered cabinetry and smooth, fatigue-free treble complete a rare blend of Heritage charm and modern acoustic refinement.
Pros
Rich, even-handed midrange brings convincing vocal presence, natural instrumental tone and impressive cohesion.
Expansive, immersive soundstage with a strong centre image when correctly positioned.
Bass is unusually weighty, punchy and controlled for a compact 6.5-inch standmount.
Well-engineered, hand-veneered cabinet is robust and effectively suppresses coloration.
Cons
Rear ports require breathing room from the wall to avoid bass boom.
Not the most explosive or hard-hitting speaker at its price; some rivals offer greater attack.
Lower-midrange warmth can become thick without careful speaker spacing and setup.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 89/100
Reviewers consistently find the Super Denton warm, balanced and unusually cohesive for a compact three-way. Its strengths are a rich, expressive midrange, smooth treble and a spacious presentation that can make it sound substantially larger than its cabinet. It does, however, reward careful positioning and sufficiently capable amplification.
Bass
91/100
For a 6.5-inch standmount, reviewers repeatedly praise bass that is extended, weighty and forceful, with StereoNET calling its output close to the maximum possible from such a modest woofer. Ecoustics heard unexpectedly deep, textured low-end impact, while several reviewers describe it as tight and punchy. Some note softer note definition than the best rivals, amplifier-dependent control, and a tendency toward boom when placed too close to a wall.
Mid
89/100
The dedicated dome midrange is widely regarded as a major asset, delivering rich, clean vocals, strong instrumental tone and an even, engaging character. Sound Advice calls it truly lovely, while AudioAdvice heard refined vocal clarity and natural guitars and voices. Erin's listening and measurements identify a mild lower-midrange recession and resonance, and Ecoustics and A British Audiophile found the lower mids can become thick if the speakers are placed too close together.
Treble
89/100
Treble is generally described as clean, smooth and detailed, with no persistent hardness, grit or exaggerated zing. StereoNET praised its linear cymbal reproduction, and AudioAdvice found that it offers clarity without harshness. Erin notes a response dip around 3kHz, while other reviewers characterize the overall balance as relaxed rather than overtly incisive.
Soundstage Imaging
90/100
A broad, immersive and convincingly three-dimensional soundstage is one of the Super Denton's most repeated strengths. Sound Advice highlights impressive width without a diffuse centre image, and StereoNET says the recorded acoustic arrives on a scale unexpected from this size of speaker. Precise placement matters: inward-facing midrange domes, modest toe-in, separation and room clearance improve focus, while one reviewer found performer outlines somewhat vague within the otherwise large stage.
Dynamics
86/100
The Super Denton is praised for poise, rhythmic control and lower compression than expected from a speaker of its size. StereoNET heard rapid starts and stops on electronic percussion and confident handling of loud rock passages. It is not the most hard-hitting or explosive option around its price, however, and Erin's measurements indicate rising distortion and compression when pushed very hard.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
91/100
The cabinet receives strong praise for combining traditional Heritage-series appearance with modern resonance control. Reviewers cite hand-matched real-wood veneers, layered cabinet construction, substantial bracing, long-hair internal damping and separate midrange and tweeter chambers. Sound Advice found the enclosure robust and usefully inert at higher levels, while Ecoustics also notes high-quality binding posts.
Value for Money
93/100
At roughly £995 in the UK and about $1,400 per pair in the US, reviewers see the Super Denton as unusually accomplished for its class. StereoNET says it offers a more grown-up presentation than its price normally permits, and Sound Advice considers its tonal and spatial abilities beyond those of price-comparable alternatives. Ecoustics and The Absolute Sound also explicitly describe it as very good value and a bargain, although Erin notes that it sits close in price to Wharfedale's larger Linton.

Manufacturer's Description — Wharfedale
Wharfedale’s new SUPER DENTON is part of Wharfedale’s Heritage series, based on classic designs from Wharfedale’s past but brought right up to date with modern drive unit, cabinet and crossover technology.
The Heritage series commenced, in 2014, with the Denton 80 anniversary model, followed by the Denton 85 and the trend-setting Linton model – which reignited a passion for the traditional, large stand mount loudspeaker. More recently complemented by the high-end Dovedale model, which signaled the return of UK manufacturing, the Heritage series emphasises why no loudspeaker manufacturer can claim a richer heritage than Wharfedale.
More Than a Reintroduction
One of the notable things about the original Denton was its compact size, helping to popularise the concept of ‘bookshelf’ speakers at a time when hi-fi speakers were usually bigger, bulkier boxes. Most Denton iterations were two-way designs, combining a mid/bass driver with a treble unit, and the same is true of the two existing 21st-century models. However, in 1971, Wharfedale launched the Denton 3, sporting a three-way driver configuration with separate bass, midrange and treble units – in doing so, Wharfedale created the smallest three-way speaker on the market, claimed to be capable of delivering the performance of much larger speaker systems.
The Wharfedale SUPER DENTON portrays an authentic legacy. Traditional, simple, and beautiful yet highly evolved, it has a thoroughly modern design that is bang up to date – utilising a mixture of traditional and advanced technology for optimum performance whilst staying true to the legacy in the classic Wharfedale tradition – beautifully hand-veneered with an inset front baffle and traditional cloth grille.
A Three-Way Design with Family History and Precedent
The industrial design and cabinet engineering required incredible effort to support such a complex array in a small volume, small footprint cabinet. Measuring 360 x 246 x 275mm (HxWxD), the SUPER DENTON’s size is similar to the Denton 3, making it one of the world’s smallest three-way hi-fi speakers – if not the smallest, just like the Denton 3 over 50 years ago.
The midrange and treble units are offset from the centre, which helps maintain the speaker’s compact stature and scatter reflections from the cabinet edges.
The SUPER DENTON cabinet features critically placed bracing and internal acoustic damping using layers of long-hair fibre, and the midrange and treble units have their own rear enclosures. The cabinet itself uses a combination of woods to scatter panel resonances rather than having a single, audibly apparent resonant frequency. An inner layer of high-density particle board is bonded to an outer layer of MDF by an inter-layer of special glue with resonance-damping properties.
The SUPER DENTON is supplied in matched, mirror-imaged pairs. With one speaker optimised for the left channel and the other for the right, accurate stereo imaging within a deep, broad soundstage is assured when the speakers are sited appropriately.
As with all models in the Heritage series, the new SUPER DENTON cabinet is wrapped with hand-matched wood veneers for a furniture-grade finish befitting any living environment – classic or modern.
The drivers are advanced on any previous model with the Denton name.
The premium cast chassis 6.5” (165mm) bass unit is tuned to the cabinet for bass extension down to 40Hz, below the fundamental ‘E1’ tuning of a standard bass guitar – impressive for a speaker of the SUPER DENTON’s compact dimensions. This driver handles bass and lower-midrange frequencies with engaging definition and expression, bringing instruments and voices to life – astonishing for a loudspeaker of this size.
The midrange unit is based around a 2” (50mm) dome design – inspired by Wharfedale’s award-winning EVO4 project.
This driver delivers upper-midrange and lower-treble frequencies with aplomb. It provides the ideal transition from the fundamental tones carried by the bass unit to the harmonic overtones higher in frequency. The wide dispersion of this dome diaphragm is responsible for the clarity and finesse that brings the musical performance alive, seamlessly transitioning from the fundamental tones carried by the bass unit to the harmonic overtones further up the frequency range.
The development of SUPER DENTON involved intricacies and attention to detail comparable to a model pitched at twice its humble price tag, as the lead designer says; “even the grille incorporates internal haping to maximise the power performance of the drive units and avoid interference from reflections from the edges of the cabinet”.
The result is a musical output that suits all genres of music and sources, whether analogue or digital. You can rest assured that SUPER DENTON will delight and satisfy listeners with musical entertainment for years to come.
