The Thorens TD 402 DD brings smooth, full-bodied vinyl playback to a handsome, easy-living direct-drive design. Its carbon-fiber arm, fitted cartridge and onboard phono stage make setup refreshingly straightforward, while lush orchestral depth, poised vocals and broad imaging flatter acoustic and classical records. Thom Moon found its performance especially rewarding once system matching is right.

Pros

Smooth, full presentation with lush strings, silky horns and convincing depth on orchestral and vocal recordings.

Broad soundstage with good separation, plus effective suppression of record surface noise.

Straightforward setup and operation, with pre-mounted cartridge, built-in phono stage and gentle cueing.

Cons

Stock cartridge can sound mellow and short on top-end sparkle, with less defined bass on demanding rock recordings.

Plinth is susceptible to induced microphonics, so placement and isolation require care.

Built-in phono stage trails a quality external stage in bass weight and imaging precision.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"The TD 402 DD is great to look at, easy to set up and operate, and under the right system conditions, it sounds quite good."

— SoundStage Solo

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 82/100

The TD 402 DD is described as smooth, full-bodied and capable of attractive imaging, with particularly convincing results on classical and orchestral material. Its mellow balance can also leave the upper treble short of sparkle, while one demanding rock recording sounded congested and poorly defined in the bass.

Overall Sound

86/100

The Thorens/Audio-Technica pairing is smooth, fairly full and especially successful with classical music; the reviewer calls it a fabulous choice for that listener. Strings sounded lush and full, horns silky, and the presentation conveyed convincing orchestral depth, though the balance was slightly mellow and lacked some top-end sparkle.

Speed Stability

80/100

The review does not directly assess pitch accuracy, wow and flutter, or long-term speed consistency. There are no reported speed-related problems, but little listening evidence to distinguish its performance in this area.

Tonearm Performance

83/100

The supplied 8.8-inch carbon-fiber arm is notably low in mass and its cueing mechanism lowers the stylus steadily and gently. Balancing the arm requires a deft touch because the counterweight adjustment is sensitive, and the review offers limited evidence about tracking behavior with difficult records.

Noise Isolation

78/100

The rubber feet provide some protection from shock and external vibration, and the cartridge pairing handled record surface noise well. However, the reviewer found the plinth relatively easy to excite into microphonics, making careful placement important.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

84/100

The TD 402 DD combines a brushed-aluminum top plate with a high-gloss plinth and four rubber isolation feet, retaining a recognizably classic Thorens presentation. The materials and finish are positively described, although the susceptibility to induced microphonics limits confidence in its isolation execution.

Features Usability

86/100

It arrives with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95E moving-magnet cartridge and a built-in phono stage, reducing the equipment needed to start playing records. Gentle cueing is another welcome practical touch, though the sensitive counterweight calls for care during setup.

Value for Money

85/100

At $1,199 with its cartridge and built-in phono stage, the package includes useful essentials rather than requiring immediate extra purchases. The review does not directly compare its asking price with competing turntables or make a firm value judgment.
