Thorens’ TD 1600 brings a silky-black background, explosive dynamics and holographic imaging to vinyl, pairing an advanced suspended chassis with a finely adjustable tonearm and exemplary finish. Audiophilia found it lively, timbrally convincing and delicate when the music demands; Fidelity Magazine praised its physical bass, emotional communication and spaciousness. A compelling high-end deck for listeners who value rhythmic drive and refinement.
Pros
Advanced sprung suspension and motor design deliver a notably quiet, stable backdrop with strong isolation.
Highly dynamic, spacious presentation combines forceful bass and drive with delicate treble, accurate timbre and convincing imaging.
Excellent fit and finish, tight tolerances and a capable, adjustable tonearm make for a premium, long-term analogue package.
Cons
The midrange can sound slightly full or rich on some classical material.
Operating the arm lift requires some dexterity because the suspended chassis is sensitive to movement.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 93/100
Reviewers find the TD 1600 highly dynamic, emotionally communicative and unusually spacious, with the ability to combine forceful rock and orchestral scale with delicacy. Its suspended design also earns praise for a notably quiet backdrop, while one reviewer heard a touch of extra midrange richness.
Overall Sound
95/100
Fidelity Magazine describes explosive dynamics, tender treble, holographic imaging and an exceptional ability to communicate emotion. Audiophilia likewise praises its lively, rhythmically driven and timbrally accurate presentation, saying it bettered a Rega comparison in nearly every respect; the only reservation was occasional midrange fullness.
Speed Stability
91/100
The electronically generated AC supply is described as precisely matched to the motor for smooth synchronization. Listening impressions of strong drive, explosive dynamics and assured rhythm support a confident sense of timing, although neither review provides measured speed figures.
Tonearm Performance
91/100
The TP 92 tonearm is repeatedly presented as a major strength, with Audiophilia calling it excellent and noting the quality of the complete package. Height and azimuth adjustment add useful cartridge-setting flexibility, though the arm lift takes some care because the suspended chassis reacts sensitively.
Noise Isolation
94/100
Audiophilia calls the spring isolation's result a "silky-black" listening experience. Fidelity Magazine reports excellent signal-to-noise performance from the motor supply and says the sub-chassis retains its isolating effect even with a heavy record clamp.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
94/100
Both reviews praise the TD 1600's execution: Audiophilia notes its tight tolerances and comprehensive, beautifully made chassis, plinth, platter and sub-platter. Fidelity Magazine calls the workmanship flawless, highlighting the lacquer, panel gaps, tactile quality and reassuring external power supply.
Features Usability
86/100
Electronic motor control, a sophisticated suspended sub-chassis and broad arm height and azimuth adjustment make this a thoughtfully specified analogue deck. It remains a focused, hands-on design rather than a convenience-led one, and the reviewer found the arm lift slightly fiddly to operate.
Value for Money
91/100
At the reviewed $2,999 price including tonearm, Audiophilia calls the TD 1600 a robust design at a reasonable price. That assessment is reinforced by praise for its advanced suspension, fine construction and performance against a Rega competitor, although the reviews do not compare it extensively across its full market segment.

Thorens TD 1600 combines the brand’s tradition of the past with 21st century’s technology.
Externally quite similar to former famous 160 series with classical wooden plinth, two-part platter with inner belt and thick rubber mat, arm board and acrylic dust cover, it contains a lot of innovations inside.
The conical springs for sub chassis are not mounted on top board any longer but standing on the bottom. Additionally, a small but strong tightened thread made of steel connects sub chassis with a steel pin on the bottom and so prevents sub chassis from staggering and allows only vertical movement.
A powerful control unit takes care of motor speed.
