The T+A SD 3100 HV combines commanding, smear-free bass with razor-sharp detail and large-scale dynamics, turning a vast range of digital sources into an exceptionally precise, vivid performance. Future Audiophile found its natural instrumental tone, dual-mono engineering and expansive connectivity genuinely reference-grade—an elite streaming DAC for systems that prize control, resolution and authority.

Pros

Exceptionally deep, clean and tightly separated bass, with no reported smear or rumble.

Highly revealing, accurate presentation with natural instrumental texture and authoritative large-scale dynamics.

Extensive digital connectivity and streaming support, including high-resolution PCM/DSD, network services, internet radio and Bluetooth.

Sophisticated dual-mono, isolated construction with a machined-aluminum enclosure and in-house DAC engineering.

Cons

Lateral imaging is slightly less expansive than the reviewer heard from Bricasti M21 Platinum Edition and PS Audio DirectStream DAC II alternatives.

Its presentation leans toward accuracy and detail rather than a warm, lush character, which may not suit every preference.

Dual-mono power supplies require two AC outlets and, for cable upgraders, two aftermarket power cords.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"Bass response has never sounded better in my audio system than with the T+A SD 3100 HV installed."

— Future Audiophile

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 94/100

The SD 3100 HV was described as magnificent in the review system, combining unusually clean, powerful bass with high clarity, natural instrumental tone and authoritative dynamics. Its presentation was praised for precision and scale, although lateral image width did not match the reviewer’s Bricasti and PS Audio reference DACs.

Tonal Balance Musicality

94/100

The reviewer heard commanding, exceptionally clean bass, a revealing and dynamic midrange, and naturally rendered guitar strings that approached the impression of a live instrument. Treble was described as detailed and razor-sharp, while horns and cymbals carried striking dynamic authority rather than sounding restrained.

Resolution Detail

93/100

Low bass was said to remain highly detailed and free of smear or rumble, with notably clear separation between bass guitar and kick drum. The reviewer also praised the unit’s clarity, accuracy and revealing midrange, though side-to-side imaging was less expansive than with two comparison DACs.

Digital Performance

94/100

The review repeatedly characterizes playback as accurate, clean and composed even with deep bass and large-scale dynamics. High-resolution material was said to soar through the SD 3100 HV, with strong definition and no reported digital roughness or low-frequency congestion.

FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 84/100

This is an exceptionally accommodating digital hub, with broad wired input support, high-resolution PCM and DSD decoding, network streaming, radio and Bluetooth. The available review confirms its flexibility but provides little firsthand assessment of the control app, setup process or software reliability.

Streaming Software

80/100

The SD 3100 HV supports Tidal, Qobuz, other streaming services and internet radio, with T+A’s MusicNavigator app listed among its facilities. However, the review does not discuss app responsiveness, library handling, setup or long-term streaming stability.

Features Connectivity

94/100

The reviewer found that virtually every imaginable digital source could be connected, and specifically noted access to streaming services, internet radio and Bluetooth playback. Its unusually broad complement includes AES/EBU, coaxial, BNC, optical, USB DAC and USB storage connections, HDMI with ARC, balanced and single-ended analog outputs, and dedicated headphone outputs.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

87/100

The SD 3100 HV uses a dual-mono layout from input to output, a machined-aluminum enclosure and internally isolated sections. Those are substantial construction details, though the review offers little direct commentary on long-term durability, controls or day-to-day mechanical behavior.

Value for Money

95/100

At roughly $24,180 to $39,990, the SD 3100 HV is firmly a luxury purchase, but the reviewer called T+A’s pricing fair. He also felt it could equal or possibly outperform competing components costing tens of thousands of dollars more, making a strong case for its value among elite digital front ends.

Manufacturer's Description — T+A

The Reference Streaming DAC

The SD 3100 HV is with the exception of the pre-amplifier section identical with the SCD 3100 HV.
The SD 3100 HV is a purist converter / streamer which in an HV system acts as ultra-high quality player and converter for every imaginable digital source. It can be connected to the P 3100 HV pre-amplifier or the PA 3100 HV integrated amplifier via one of its analogue outputs. If you wish to play CD or SACD, the PDT 3100 HV reference disc mechanism can be connected to the SD 3100 HV.
The SD 3100 HV - and also a full HV system - can be controlled using the F 3100 remote control handset or the T+A MusicNavigator App.

Headphone Amp

Since more and more audiophile music enthusiasts use high-quality headphones, we have developed a particularly good, high-performance analogue headphone amplifier which also exploits HV technology; it works completely in Class A mode, and offers outstanding sound quality. The connection sockets for 6.3 mm jack plugs and high-quality, quadrupole-symmetrical pentaconn plugs are located on the front.

Construction

Like all our HV devices the SD 3100 HV is built of pure aluminium, without any ferro-magnetic materials at all, and features five compartments separated by aluminium dividing walls. These sections house the motherboard with digital inputs, the D/A converters with analogue output stage, the analogue mains section, the digital mains section and - in the massive front panel - the control section with its bright display and sensor buttons.
