Sumiko’s Amethyst brings tight, punchy rhythm and superb controlled bass to the upper tier of moving-magnet playback. Its nude line-contact stylus uncovers fine instrumental texture while keeping dense electronic and rock records direct, powerful and engaging. Marc Phillips found it an impressively musical, balanced MM choice with notably low noise for the breed.

Pros

Tight, punchy, rhythmically compelling presentation with direct, powerful drive.

Smooth, controlled and extended bass, with strong weight and definition.

Reveals fine groove detail, including subtle bass-guitar finger and thumb texture.

One of the quieter moving-magnet cartridges the reviewer had used, with musical and balanced tonality.

Cons

Less dynamically open and airy than the moving-coil cartridges used for comparison, with less apparent space between instruments.

Costs more than typical moving-magnet cartridges, despite being considered reasonable for its performance.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"The Sumiko Amethyst has so many strengths as a moving-magnet cartridge that it’s difficult to ignore."

— Part Time Audiophile

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 90/100

The Amethyst is presented as a musical, balanced and highly engaging moving-magnet cartridge, with especially strong rhythmic drive and bass control. It retrieves fine instrumental texture well, although its presentation is not described as especially airy or expansive.

Overall Sound

91/100

Marc Phillips found the Amethyst immediately tight, punchy, rhythmic and powerful. He also calls it one of the more musical and balanced choices available to listeners committed to moving-magnet cartridges, while praising its smooth, controlled and extended low frequencies.

Tracking Retrieval

92/100

The nude line-contact stylus is backed up by strong listening evidence of information retrieval: the review says the Amethyst is not stingy with groove information. On bass guitar, it exposed unusually fine finger and thumb textures that the reviewer had not fully noticed before.

Soundstage Imaging

84/100

The cartridge could distinguish layers of bass energy and separate the direct beat from the room's response, suggesting clear image organization. However, the reviewer also heard less airiness, dynamic openness and apparent space between instruments and room boundaries than desired.

FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 86/100

Tonearm compatibility / system fit.

Tonearm Compatibility

86/100

At 6.5g with moderate compliance and a conventional 1.8g–2.2g tracking-force range, the Amethyst should suit many medium-mass tonearms. Its 2.5mV moving-magnet output and 47kΩ loading requirement are comparatively straightforward for MM-capable phono stages, while careful alignment remains important for the line-contact stylus.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

80/100

The Amethyst uses a nude line-contact stylus, aluminum-pipe cantilever and high-purity copper coils, with a standard 6.5g body weight. The review does not offer direct observations on fit, finish, durability or long-term stylus assembly quality.

Value for Money

88/100

The review calls the approximately $600 asking price very reasonable, even while acknowledging that it is expensive by moving-magnet standards. Its combination of strong bass, vivid rhythm, balanced tonality and high information retrieval makes the premium seem well supported for listeners seeking an upscale MM design.

Manufacturer's Description — Sumiko

Featuring an improved low-impedance, low-noise generator, Amethyst renders stark black backgrounds from which music simply blossoms. To do justice to the improved generator, we add a low-mass nude line-contact stylus to an ultra-stiff, low-mass hollow cantilever. The overall reduction in moving mass propels the highest level of stylus fidelity, faithfully conveying its motion to the fixed coil assembly. Thusly Amethyst transcribes vivid detail, wowing dynamics and exceptional spacial imaging in an inviting, articulate soundstage. Music flows effortlessly with compelling depth, immersing you in the richness we all love about analog sound.

“…it communicates the essence of music—the PRaT, timbral accuracy, and midrange presence of music—with such efficacy that it will move a listener on an emotional level.” —NOVO

“The Sumiko Amethyst has so many strengths as a moving-magnet cartridge that it’s difficult to ignore. The bass response is superb. It’s one of the quietest MMs I’ve ever used… the Sumiko Amethyst has to be one of the most musical and balanced choices you can make.” —Part-Time Audiophile

Our Oyster MM Cartridges

Our Oyster Series cartridges have established themselves as smooth, warm and refined alternatives to more aggressive-sounding options. They are exceptionally crafted with premium materials, enabling highly musical, poised and polished sonics that steer clear of listening fatigue. An integrated body and generator system stifles internal resonance and readily transfers uncontrolled energy from the cartridge to the tonearm where it is dissipated harmlessly. This reduces distortion and coloration, leaving you with pure analog fidelity that conveys the emotional message embedded in your music.

Upgrade Path

Rainier, Olympia, Moonstone, Wellfleet and Amethyst use interchangeable stylus replacements. This allows you to upgrade when it suits you, or to keep a backup around for worn records. The cartridge bodies are identical with the exception of Amethyst, which uses an enhanced anatomy but remains compatible with the full range of styli. As you move up, you achieve improved fidelity with varying cantilevers, magnets and stylus tips, all of which bear audible improvements in detail, imagining, resolution and more.

Handmade in Japan

Each Sumiko phono cartridge is hand-assembled by the world-class cartridge makers at Excel Sound in Yokohama, Japan – a relationship we’ve proudly maintained for nearly forty years. We use only the finest materials that combine to deliver performance that has enlightened generations of listeners. Each design is thoroughly auditioned until it meets our stringent standards for sound. Production is then executed by expert craftsmen with a collective eye for precision & quality. The result is a family of cartridges that render emotion through tonally balanced, refined and fatigueless analog reproduction.
