Sonus Faber’s Lumina V Amator wraps music in rich, well-weighted bass, an open midrange and sweet, revealing treble, creating a spacious presentation that remains inviting through long sessions. HiFi News praises its cohesive musical ease, while Sound Advice highlights its room-friendly placement and luxurious craftsmanship. It is an elegant, refined floorstander built for realistic voices, instruments and immersive stereo listening.

Pros

Refined, cohesive sound combines rich bass, open midrange and sweet yet explicit treble.

Creates a spacious, three-dimensional soundstage with convincing depth and strong image placement.

Downward-firing port makes placement forgiving, and the speakers work well with a wide range of amplifiers.

High-gloss wood veneer, leather-wrapped cabinet and careful engineering deliver luxurious build quality.

Cons

Not intended for PA-like volume levels or aggressively raw, abrasive recordings.

Bass prioritizes weight and warmth over the hardest kick-drum impact and leading-edge transient snap.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"These should be on every fledgling audio files list of musthaves."

"The Lumina V Amator, however, steps right up to the plate with a sound that's refined, cultured and supremely easy to enjoy."

— HiFi News

"They look - and feel - luxurious, are a real talking-point, and will delight listeners with their rich, yet spacious, sound."

— Sound Advice

"Positioning is no trickier, in no small part due to that downward-firing port."

— Audiophilepure

"With their rated 89dB sensitivity, 4ohm nominal impedance and a 50W minimum power requirement, these are not especially demanding speakers."

— Audiophilepure

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 93/100

Reviewers consistently describe a refined, musical and unusually cohesive presentation, combining tonal richness with clarity and an easy, non-fatiguing character. It is more cultured than aggressively forward, but still has the scale, punch and spatial insight to make well-recorded music involving.

Bass

92/100

The twin-woofer design is widely praised for rich, well-weighted and taut bass, with convincing heft on double bass and satisfying punch on energetic music. The Absolute Sound notes that kick drums favour a softer, fluffier thump over the hardest leading-edge impact, and that transient snap diminishes approaching the speaker's low-frequency roll-off.

Mid

94/100

The midrange earns especially strong praise for being open, clean and attractive, with natural weight and definition on piano, voices and instruments. The Absolute Sound found the upper-bass-to-midrange region a particular strength, crediting its tonal balance with making brass instruments sound vividly present.

Treble

92/100

Treble is repeatedly characterised as sweet, explicit and revealing rather than sharp or fatiguing. Reviewers appreciate its gentle ease with challenging recordings, though listeners seeking deliberately aggressive brightness or extreme high-frequency attack may prefer a different voicing.

Soundstage Imaging

94/100

The Lumina V Amator creates a convincing, three-dimensional acoustic that can extend beyond the cabinets, with distinct performer placement and meaningful depth. It is also accommodating of placement, with modest toe-in sufficient to lock in the image; only at unnecessarily high levels did one reviewer hear occasional image collapse.

Dynamics

91/100

Reviewers found ample punch, texture and detail in lively material, with rock able to slam into the room while preserving its character. They are not voiced for PA-like sound-pressure levels or overt aggression, but within sensible domestic levels they are described as engaging and expressive.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

93/100

The cabinet’s high-gloss real-wood veneer, leather-wrapped surfaces, magnetic grilles and substantial plinth create a notably luxurious impression. Hi-Fi News calls the speakers beautifully built for the money, while the downward-firing port and stable spiked base combine attractive execution with practical room friendliness.

Value for Money

92/100

At roughly £2,999 per pair, or around $3,475-$4,500 depending on market, reviewers regard the Amator upgrade as more than cosmetic: the enhanced engineering is said to contribute meaningfully to its refined sound. Sound Advice calls them hard to beat for the money for realistic voices and instruments, while Hi-Fi News finds little evidence of compromise in either sound or construction despite their relatively accessible place in the Sonus Faber range.

Manufacturer's Description — Sonus Faber

Slender speakers with surprising performance.

Lumina V Amator builds upon Lumina V, with upgraded technology and fresh design queues.

AMATOR HERITAGE

Amator is an evocative name, which has always characterized all the special Sonus faber models, becoming synonymous with uniqueness. Any market enthusiast knows that from this name it is right to expect an exciting and engaging listen.

MADE IN ITALY

Made in Sonus faber’s Vicenza, Italy factory, Lumina Amator incorporates iconic Sonus faber design materials, including wood and leather. Lumina V Amator features the simple squared design of the Lumina collection with new front panels featuring 45-degree woodgrain lacquered veneers.

IMPROVED CROSSOVER

The Lumina V Amator crossovers have been designed, inheriting the legacy left by the development of the new Homage collection. Many of the solutions adopted on the new special models are derived from those of the Amati G5 and Guarneri G5.

Lumina V Amator boasts an upgraded crossover network at 2850 Hz, a 250 Hz improvement from Lumina V, elevating the listening experience to new heights.

SIMPLICITY AND STYLE

Lumina takes note of Sonus faber’s iconic natural materials.

SIMPLICITY, STYLE, AND PERFORMANCE

Lumina takes note from core Sonus faber technologies, design, and manufacturing principles – transforming them into a beautifully minimalistic masterpiece, made in Italy.

TWEETER

The iconic D.A.D. (Damped Apex Dome) tweeter, the same used in the Sonetto series, features a Kurtmueller hand coated soft silk diaphragm of 29mm. The chrome rings around the drivers highlight their shapes and proportions and give brightness to the front baffle.

MIDRANGE

The 6” midranges mirror those from the sister collection, Sonetto, and still feature the Sonus faber proprietary natural fiber and paper blend air-dried diaphragm.

WOOFER

The 6.5’’ woofers were designed from the scratch specifically for the Lumina range. They feature a paper pulp cone for a perfect sonic coherence with the rest for the drivers.

IFF CROSSOVER

The IFF circuitry and the phase coherent philosophy ensure perfect rendering of the virtual sound stage in three dimensions. The new filters also offer greater resolution and more rigorous and coherent reproduction.
