Ortofon’s MC Cadenza Mono brings rich tonal colour, explosive dynamics and intimate vocal nuance to mono reissues and later hi-fi pressings. Garrett Hongo found its fine-line stylus delivered secure tracking, vivid textures and a lively, speaker-disappearing presence—an exceptional specialist cartridge for revealing the drama locked in well-cut mono grooves.
Pros
Delivers rich, vibrant tonal colour, strong dynamic contrast and intimate detail on mono reissues and later pressings.
Fine-line stylus tracks demanding dynamic swings and complex passages with steady precision.
Creates an airy, immediate presentation that makes speakers seem to disappear.
Cons
Less convincing with some pre-1958 vintage mono LPs, where treble instruments could sound compressed, thin or peaky compared with a spherical-stylus alternative.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 91/100
This is an expressive, energetic mono cartridge with rich tonal colour, strong dynamic contrasts and an unusually involving, intimate presentation. It brings out fine vocal and instrumental textures while retaining composure through demanding passages.
Overall Sound
94/100
The reviewer found music richer, suppler and more vibrant than through the SPU GM Mono Mk.II reference. Tonal colour, vocal expression and dynamic contrast drew particularly strong praise, with bass described as clear and propulsive and drums carrying convincing physical impact.
Tracking Retrieval
94/100
The nude fine-line stylus was reported to track superbly, staying secure through dramatic swings and dense, tonally intense material. It also recovered intimate vocal detail and complex instrumental information with steady precision, while reducing rather than exacerbating noise from worn vintage records.
Soundstage Imaging
80/100
As a mono cartridge, spatial presentation is assessed at a fixed level. The review nevertheless describes abundant air and liveliness, with the speakers seeming to disappear and the performance taking on a close, third-row-club immediacy.
FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 84/100
Tonearm compatibility / system fit.
Tonearm Compatibility
84/100
Its 12 µm/mN compliance and 10.7 g mass suggest a sensible match for many medium- to heavier-mass arms, and it uses standard half-inch mounting. As a low-output moving-coil design, however, it needs an appropriate MC phono stage or step-up device and careful loading within Ortofon's recommended 50-500 ohm range.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
80/100
The stainless-steel and aluminium body, aluminium cantilever and nude fine-line stylus indicate a purposefully specified premium design. The review says little about assembly precision, durability or long-term ownership quality.
Value for Money
92/100
At $1,120 in the review, the Cadenza Mono was described as delivering excellent sound and very high value when used for its intended mono-record application. Its substantial price still makes it a specialist purchase, but the reviewer considered its performance persuasive in that context.

The Cadenza series
At Ortofon, we perpetually seek fresh technologies to incorporate into our products, driving the advancement of current technologies. This commitment ensures the attainment of the utmost performance and quality. The Kontrapunkt models and MC Jubilee have set benchmarks in the market, emerging as some of our most sought-after cartridges. Yet, in spite of this success, Ortofon has chosen to embark on the development of a novel cartridge series that aspires to even greater heights.
Each of the five Cadenza Series cartridges has its own individual sonic expression, and all five models together represent the ensemble of five classic variations.
The MC Cadenza Mono is a true mono cartridge for playing mono microgroove vinyl records.
