The Ortofon 2M Blue brings sweet immediacy, transparent detail and a notably more dynamic vinyl presentation to moving-magnet systems. Audiophilia found confident tracking and fine instrumental separation, while Gramophone highlights the nude elliptical stylus’s added punch, groove insight and midrange clarity. It is a persuasive, high-value step beyond basic cartridges.

Pros

Sweet, immediate and transparent sound with stronger dynamics and clearer midrange detail than the 2M Red.

Tracks confidently and retrieves fine detail, with VTA adjustment improving focus.

Excellent value, delivering performance reviewers considered well beyond its price class.

Cons

Upper strings and brass can sound slightly edgy or strident in some systems.

Bass is lively but less deeply layered and defined than higher-end cartridges.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"for two and a quarter, there is no arguing the Blue is a cartridge performing well above its price point."

— Audiophilia

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 90/100

Reviewers find the 2M Blue notably sweet, immediate and open, with more dynamic range and midrange clarity than the entry-level 2M Red. Its presentation brings a strong sense of musical engagement and separation, although the upper registers can sound slightly edgy on strings and brass, while bass is more energetic than deeply layered.

Overall Sound

90/100

Audiophilia heard a sweet, immediate sound that recalled more expensive moving-coil cartridges, alongside a dynamic midrange with fine instrumental separation. Gramophone likewise found greater transparency, punch, dynamic range and midrange clarity than the 2M Red; the main caveats are some upper-string and trumpet stridency, plus bass that is less defined than it is lively.

Tracking Retrieval

92/100

Audiophilia reports that the Blue “tracked like a champ” and calls it an easy cartridge to load, while VTA adjustment brought sharper focus to violin reproduction. Both reviews identify improved groove access and detail extraction, with small musical details standing out more clearly than with the 2M Red.

Soundstage Imaging

87/100

Audiophilia praises the dynamic midrange and fine separation of instruments, and found the presentation became more focused once VTA was properly set. Neither review offers much specific comment on soundstage width or depth, but the evidence points to stable, clearly separated images.

FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 89/100

Tonearm compatibility / system fit is generally friendly for a conventional moving-magnet setup, though careful VTA adjustment helps it deliver its best focus and detail.

Tonearm Compatibility

89/100

With 5.5mV output, standard 47kOhm loading and moderate 20µm/mN compliance, the Blue should suit many MM-capable phono stages and appropriately matched medium-mass tonearms. Audiophilia describes it as an easy load, but also found that arm-height adjustment was worthwhile, so it rewards more careful setup rather than simply dropping into every arm unchanged.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

86/100

The 2M Blue uses a nude elliptical diamond on an aluminium cantilever, a meaningful step up from bonded-stylus designs in this family. Reviewers do not offer detailed commentary on long-term durability or body construction, but the stylus execution is consistent with its clean retrieval and focused setup behavior.

Value for Money

95/100

At roughly $225 in the Audiophilia review, the Blue was called very reasonably priced and said to perform well above its price point. Its blend of sweetness, tracking confidence, stronger detail and increased dynamics over the 2M Red makes the upgrade persuasive for listeners seeking a more revealing MM cartridge without moving to a far costlier moving-coil system.

Manufacturer's Description — Ortofon

The goal for any cartridge should be to reproduce the sound as close to the artist's vision as possible, and the 2M blue takes you further on this journey of authenticity. With the 2M Blue, you get serious about listening to vinyl.

Accuracy level

The goal for any cartridge should be to reproduce the sound as close to the artist's vision as possible, and the 2M Blue takes you further on this journey of authenticity. With the 2M Blue, you get serious about listening to vinyl.

Stylus

The Nude diamond is cut in an Elliptical shape, and when it hits the groove, it is like travelling through both space and time to the very moment the music was recorded.

Compatibility

Created to facilitate simple installation of the cartridge and to ensure compatibility with the dimensions and weights of today's most popular turntables, the 2M Series offers four distinct product versions:

The 2M is for most common turntables on the market, the 2M Premounted for customers who wish direct and easy mounting and replacement on their S-shaped tonearm, the 2M Verso for bottom mount headshells, and the 2MR, which is designed with cartridge housing tailored for turntables and tonearms like Rega, matching their requirement for low-form factor cartridges.

Features

The 2M Blue features Ortofon’s very own invention and trademark: split pole pins. An invention that enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response as with a moving coil cartridge.

In this video, you will learn about four cartridge technologies, including the split pole pin technology. Leif Johannsen, Ortofon's Chief Officer of Acoustics and Research, explains how the technology works by reducing the loss of energy and hereby the loss of the musical signal.

The engine provides an increased output of 5.5 mV optimized sound reproduction and a high level of sonic accuracy. The 2M Blue adds more dynamics and resolution, sounds more open, and reproduces more details compared to the 2M Red model.
