Legacy Audio Studio HD monitors turn compact dimensions into a deep, holographic soundstage, with pinpoint imaging, vivid AMT-tweeter detail and confident dynamics that stay composed at volume. HomeTheaterHifi praised their stable, room-filling scale, while Audioholics found their imaging and fine detail exceptional. Hand-tuned construction and adjustable tonal filters complete a seriously accomplished reference monitor.
Pros
Exceptional stereo imaging with broad, three-dimensional staging, remarkable depth and stable instrument placement.
Detailed, clear AMT treble with wide dispersion and little added sibilance or beaminess.
Plays loudly with strong dynamic range while remaining unstrained and controlled.
Substantial, well-braced cabinet, robust all-metal terminals and useful bass/treble adjustment switches.
Cons
The lowest bass lacks the physical impact of a larger speaker; a subwoofer is recommended for full bottom-octave weight.
On-axis treble may sound slightly over-detailed for some listeners, so careful toe-in or the treble filter may be needed.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 92/100
Reviewers found the Studio HD unusually full-range and composed for a compact monitor, combining impactful bass, natural voices and instruments, detailed AMT treble, and exceptional stereo imaging. Its presentation is especially strong in depth, image specificity, and dynamic scale, though the lowest bass does not have the physical weight of a larger speaker or subwoofer-equipped system.
Bass
91/100
For an 8-inch, rear-ported stand-mount, bass was widely considered substantial rather than anemic, with deep drums described as defined and impactful. The HomeTheaterHifi review notes that a subwoofer usefully restores the lowest octave, while Audioholics found low bass present but less forceful than desired on particularly demanding material.
Mid
89/100
The thick, well-braced enclosure was credited with avoiding audible midrange coloration. Vocals retained both power and beauty, and horns were praised for their natural resonance, although the reviews provide less detailed midband commentary than they do on imaging and treble.
Treble
91/100
The AMT tweeter earned praise for high-frequency detail, vocal clarity, broad dispersion, and an absence of added sibilance or beaminess. One listener preferred less direct toe-in because the on-axis top end delivered slightly more detail than desired, making setup worthwhile for tonal balance.
Soundstage Imaging
96/100
Imaging is a standout: reviewers heard a broad, enveloping stage with particularly convincing depth, stable placement, and a remarkably solid centre image. Audioholics called the detail and imaging the best heard in that room, while HomeTheaterHifi found the Legacy deeper-staging than its KEF comparison speaker.
Dynamics
94/100
The Studio HD was reported to play loudly without becoming strained, pinched, or strident, and to seem more open as volume increased. Explosive film material and large orchestral passages showed dynamic range that Audioholics considered on par with the best.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
94/100
The reviews describe unusually substantial construction for the size, including a thick MDF cabinet, internal bracing, hardwood housing, and a roughly 30-pound weight per speaker. High-quality all-metal binding posts, careful packaging, and the availability of handcrafted finishes reinforce the impression of a seriously made monitor.
Value for Money
95/100
At the reviewed $1,450-per-pair MSRP, reviewers considered the Studio HD exceptionally strong value relative to competing speakers, citing its big-speaker performance, finish quality, and handcrafted construction. Audioholics specifically said it delivered some of the best performance per dollar it had heard and seemed likely to cost considerably more; shoppers should nevertheless compare current pricing, listed at $3,500-$4,500, with present-day alternatives.

Manufacturer's Description — Legacy Audio
Originally designed as a monitor for a top recording studio, the Legacy Studio HD offers unmatched clarity and dynamics in a compact enclosure. Don’t let its size fool you. The Studio HD is a robust compact monitor featuring an 8” Silver/Graphite bass/midrange driver and a 1” dual pole AMT folded ribbon for a perfect balance of power and articulation.
The Legacy Studio HD: Professional Reference Monitors for Discerning Ears
Designed initially for a top recording studio, the Legacy Studio HD is a high-performance monitor that delivers an open, dynamic, and accurate sound. The sound is open and airy, yet a kick drum “feels” like a kick drum. Vocals are robust and effortless. You can hear lungs fill with air before the first note is sung.
Its compact design belies its robust build and powerful performance. These professional reference monitors feature an 8-inch Silver/Graphite woven diaphragm woofer and a 1-inch dual pole AMT folded ribbon tweeter, the same tweeter found in Legacy Audio’s flagship models.
The Studio HD’s meticulous engineering provides a flat frequency response from 41 Hz to 30 kHz, ensuring critical accuracy for mixing and mastering. The rear-ported cabinet, constructed from dense 1.125″ MDF, and independent high- and low-frequency contour switches allow for precise room adjustments, making them a versatile tool for any studio or home environment.
Studio HD excels as both a left and right main speaker, as well as a surround speaker for Atmos® systems. Coupled with the Metro XD subwoofer, Studio HD offers a building block approach to true high-end audio.
The Legacy 1” dual pole AMT folded ribbon delivers airy and clear highs up to 30 kHz and is the same award-winning Legacy AMT found in the larger Focus SE & Aeris floor-standing speakers.
Studio HD features a proprietary 8” woven Silver/Graphite bass/midrange driver with a cast basket. The woofer is designed to prevent acoustic interference across the larger surface area of the driver. Thanks to the deep tuning of this ultra-efficient driver, the range of the Studio HD is impressively large.
