Reference 4 Meta delivers floorstander-level low end with precise, extended and controlled bass extension, thanks to four 165mm woofers and port tuning. The Uni-Q coaxial with MAT provides cohesive, low-distortion mids and refined treble, yielding a wide, precise soundstage and excellent dynamics that reward robust amplification.
Pros
Exceptional low-frequency extension and control from four 165 mm woofers and bass-reflex tuning.
Uni‑Q coaxial with MAT delivers accurate midrange timbre and very low distortion through the mid and treble bands.
Wide, precise imaging and a stable soundstage enabled by point-source Uni‑Q geometry and a three‑way crossover.
Cons
Ported design and substantial bass output can challenge small rooms and may require careful placement or room treatment.
High price and heavy, premium construction make them less compelling for budget-focused buyers.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 92/100
Bass
92/100
Four 165 mm woofers plus bass-reflex tuning and a quoted in-room -6dB bass of 33 Hz produce exceptional extension and control for this driver configuration; scored 'for its size' given multiple 6.5" woofers delivering floorstand-like low end. Ported design and room gain may affect bass balance in small rooms.
Mid
92/100
Uni‑Q coaxial with a 125 mm aluminium mid and KEF's MAT-loaded HF gives very accurate timbre, strong vocal presence and cohesion between drivers; specs show low distortion in the midband supporting high clarity and neutrality.
Treble
92/100
MAT-loaded 25 mm aluminium dome on the Uni‑Q provides extended top end to 45 kHz and low distortion figures; expect refined, detailed treble with minimal harshness when well-mated to amplifiers.
Soundstage Imaging
93/100
Uni‑Q point‑source geometry and three‑way crossover (450 Hz / 2.1 kHz) favor precise imaging, stable center images and a wide, deep soundstage for large-format speakers of this class.
Dynamics
90/100
High maximum SPL (116 dB), 88 dB sensitivity and multiple bass drivers give strong macro- and micro-dynamic capability; benefits from a robust 50–200 W amplifier to reach full headroom.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
94/100
Reference-series construction, heavy 45.2 kg cabinet mass and premium driver materials indicate excellent cabinet bracing, finish and component quality consistent with a flagship line.
Features Connectivity
80/100
Passive baseline applied.
Value for Money
76/100
At US$8,999 the speakers are expensive but deliver Reference‑class sound, build and bass extension; strong value if you want flagship KEF performance, less so versus lower‑priced high‑performance alternatives.
