Rating for ZEN CAN Signature

Nicely Roasted

Sound Quality

89/100

Build Quality

84/100

Features Usability

90/100

Value for Money

94/100

Delivering clean, punchy dynamics with impressive composure, the ZEN CAN Signature brings real drive to desktop listening. HiFi News found its presentation clear, lively and notably free of grit, while broad gain adjustment, balanced connectivity and a preamp output make this a remarkably flexible analogue headphone amplifier. Its energetic, full-bodied performance makes everyday headphone systems feel freshly awakened.

Pros

Clean, lively and punchy sound with strong dynamic impact and clear separation.

Powerful, composed headphone driving that remains controlled through deep bass swells.

Flexible analogue connectivity, including balanced input, dual headphone outputs and balanced preamp output.

Excellent value, usability and plug-and-play appeal for a desktop amplifier.

Cons

Treble lacks some ultimate air and sparkle, limiting the sense of top-end openness.

XBass can sound overly thick with recordings that already have a robust low end.

The 3D processing effect is subtle and offers only a slight soundstage reorganisation.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"This is a little amp that delivers a lot!"

— HiFi News — Mark Craven

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 89/100

The ZEN CAN Signature is described as clean, clear and dynamically lively, with a notably quiet presentation. Its strongest traits are punch and ease, though the reviewer heard less air and sparkle at the top end and found the XBass mode can become overly thick with some material.

Transparency Resolution

89/100

HiFi News praised the clarity of the presentation, hearing clear space between synthesiser effects and no unwanted grit. The reviewer did note that higher frequencies lacked some air and sparkle, tempering its sense of openness.

Tonal Balance Musicality

87/100

The amplifier was found engaging and purposeful, combining a light touch with satisfying bass presence and immersive imaging. XBass can add welcome weight, but the effect was also described as overly thickened on some recordings.

Dynamics

92/100

Dynamic energy is a clear strength: the reviewer said it brought life that the system could not muster without it. It was also called clean, sprightly and punchy, remaining unflustered during deep bass swells.

Noise Floor

86/100

HiFi News heard a subjective absence of unwanted noise or grit in normal listening. There is no direct reporting with highly sensitive IEMs, so its behavior with the most noise-revealing earphones is less clear.

Headphone Compatibility

91/100

Four gain settings, sub-1-ohm headphone output impedance and substantial balanced and single-ended power make this a flexible desktop partner on paper. The review confirms easy, plug-and-play use and a meaningful performance lift, although it offers limited direct comparison across a wide range of headphone types.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

84/100

The review describes a symmetrical balanced analogue circuit using FET op-amps and high-grade surface-mounted parts. It says little about chassis durability, control feel or long-term reliability, but the underlying design appears thoughtfully executed.

Features Usability

90/100

Connectivity is unusually accommodating for an analogue amplifier, with RCA, 3.5mm and balanced 4.4mm inputs, plus 6.35mm and 4.4mm headphone outputs. A balanced preamp output, four gain settings, XBass and 3D analogue processing add useful flexibility, while the large central volume control supports straightforward everyday operation.

Value for Money

94/100

At $299, HiFi News repeatedly presents the ZEN CAN as conspicuously good value, calling it keenly priced and a double-take purchase. The reviewer felt it combines style, ease of use and strong performance without needing its EQ features to make a persuasive case.

Manufacturer's Description — ifi Audio

Our award-winning headphone amp, perfected.

The Signature edition refines the acclaimed original with upgraded circuitry, audiophile components, and the addition of an iPower2 power supply with Active Noise Cancellation technology.

Enhanced circuitry. Premium components. Signature Sound.

The original ZEN CAN, our all-analogue headphone amplifier, excelled at driving demanding headphone loads with its balanced circuit design, extremely low distortion, and exceptional sonics. The ZEN CAN Signature takes this design further, featuring enhanced circuitry and audiophile-grade components. Its balanced, symmetrical dual-mono circuitry can deliver a maximum of 1,890mW (11.0V) into 64-ohm loads and offer over 15V to loads of 600 ohms or higher, all through its balanced output.

Why ZEN CAN Signature? Because More Power Matters.

Connect your laptop, phone, or DAC to the ZEN CAN Signature and plug in your headphones. Delivering 50 times more power, you’ll finally hear what you’ve been missing. However, the ZEN CAN Signature offers more than just power; it also delivers warm and exceptional sound quality. This is thanks to its Class A discrete balanced circuitry, inherited from the flagship Pro iCAN headphone amplifier.

ZEN CAN Signature: 1,600mW

Premium Inside and Out

The ZEN CAN Signature employs a military-spec PCB to enhance signal integrity. It also incorporates audiophile-grade components, such as:

  • ELNA Silmic II and OS-CON capacitors offer excellent noise reduction capabilities and frequency characteristics.
  • iFi/AMR ‘OV’ ‘Operationsverstärker’ series op-amps provide low noise and distortion, delivering performance that equals or surpasses many high-end headphone amplifiers.
  • For more details, refer to the photo below.

Unlike other headphone amplifiers that come with standard power supplies like those for notebooks, the ZEN CAN Signature includes the iFi iPower2 power supply. This features Active Noise Cancellation II to eliminate all incoming EMI and RFI noise, ensuring a clean and clear audio experience.

3 In, 3 Out. Free to Connect.

The ZEN CAN Signature offers a range of input options, including stereo RCA, 3.5mm single-ended, and 4.4mm balanced inputs, making it versatile enough to connect with your laptops, phones, or DACs.

For output, it provides a 4.4mm balanced option for headphones that support balanced connections. It also features a 6.3mm jack for headphones with standard single-ended connectors. If you’re using earphones with a 3.5mm plug, a 3.5mm to 6.3mm adapter is available, so there’s no need to worry. The unit also includes an analogue balanced output on the back panel, ideal for connecting active speakers via a 4.4mm to XLR adapter. As the ZEN CAN Signature is fully balanced and dual-mono circuit design, this is the recommended output option.

No Pain. Just Gain and Bass.

The ZEN CAN Signature offers multiple customisation options to suit a wide range of headphones.

Starting with PowerMatch, the unit provides four gain settings in six dB steps: 0dB, 6dB, 12dB, and 18dB. This feature ensures compatibility from super-sensitive IEMs to power-hungry headphones. We recommend starting at 0dB and then gradually adjusting the switchable gain level to find your optimal volume for both enjoyment and comfort. It also features two analogue processing modes, XSpace and XBass, designed to enhance the soundstage and low-frequency response of your headphones.

The Signature brothers.

If you’re looking to upgrade your Desk-Fi system to support high-resolution music files up to 32-bit/384kHz, DSD256, and MQA, the ZEN DAC Signature V2 is the ideal companion for the ZEN CAN Signature. This device can serve as a pure DAC, enhancing your audio experience.

To set it up, simply connect your laptop to the USB Digital Input on the ZEN DAC Signature V2. Then, link it to the ZEN CAN Signature using either RCA cables or an iFi 4.4 to 4.4 cable. We highly recommend using the 4.4 to 4.4 cable for optimal performance. Once connected, you can enjoy high-resolution music files seamlessly.

Tailored versions for YOUR headphones
