The Focal Theva N°1 delivers an expansive soundstage and a rich, articulate midrange that gives vocals, jazz and acoustic music real presence. Its Slatefiber driver and inverted-dome tweeter bring smooth detail, crisp pacing and an invitingly relaxed balance; ecoustics found its imaging exceptional for the class. A refined standmount that makes long listening sessions feel effortless.

Pros

Exceptionally spacious, precise imaging that performs beyond expectations for the price.

Rich, detailed midrange and smooth treble create a relaxed, non-fatiguing presentation.

Crisp percussion, strong pacing and clean upper-bass definition suit jazz, classical and acoustic music particularly well.

Cons

Deep-bass extension and visceral impact are limited; a subwoofer is advisable for larger rooms or full-range cinema use.

Direct toe-in can make the treble overly prominent, and the rear port benefits from space behind the speaker.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 89/100

The Theva N°1 is consistently described as a smooth, relaxed and musically involving standmount with particularly strong midrange clarity and imaging. Its deepest bass and ultimate transient punch are limited by the compact format, but reviewers found its tonal balance, detail and pacing highly satisfying with most music.

Bass

85/100

For a rear-ported 6.5-inch standmount, the Theva N°1 offers defined, articulate mid-bass with good texture: Ecoustics heard crisp kick drum and clean 80–120Hz performance without thickness or smearing. However, both Ecoustics and Part Time Audiophile noted reduced low-bass extension and impact, with the latter finding some recordings short on lower-octave weight and punch; a subwoofer is advisable for larger rooms or full-range home cinema.

Mid

91/100

The midrange is a major strength. Part Time Audiophile found it rich, detailed and smooth through the crossover region, while Ecoustics praised the speaker's ability to convey instrumental presence, piano smoothness and ensemble interplay. There is a touch of extra bloom that can approach mild muddiness on some material, but the reviewer did not find it objectionable.

Treble

90/100

Reviewers describe the treble as detailed and clear without becoming hard or fatiguing. Part Time Audiophile agreed with Focal's description of it as soft and precise, saying it retains detail while taking the edge off, and Ecoustics found strong vocal range and dynamic shifts convincingly handled. Careful setup matters: aiming the speakers directly at the listener brought too much treble information, while a near-straight-ahead orientation worked best.

Soundstage Imaging

93/100

Imaging is one of the Theva N°1's standout qualities. Ecoustics called its soundstage and imaging incredibly impressive, reporting images that extended beyond expectations for this price point regardless of amplification. The rear port is also said to contribute to a more enveloping presentation, though sensible distance from the rear wall remains important.

Dynamics

86/100

The speaker has strong speed, clarity and rhythmic pacing, with Ecoustics noting crisp percussion and kick-drum impact. It is less convincing with the hardest transient-heavy material: Part Time Audiophile missed some of the punch available from larger speakers. Jazz, classical and older rock were nevertheless described as particularly enjoyable, and dialogue retained useful weight at low volume.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

88/100

The Theva range earns praise for excellent overall construction, attractive finishes and a clean, sophisticated minimalist appearance. Reviewers liked the magnetic grille, distinctive Slatefiber driver presentation and unusually comfortable large binding posts. The N°1 itself uses a lightweight cabinet with dark wood-effect vinyl rather than a luxury real-wood finish, but it remains an attractively executed speaker for the asking price.

Value for Money

91/100

At $998 per pair in the US and £659 per pair in the UK, reviewers regard the Theva N°1 as a compelling entry into Focal's range. Part Time Audiophile's unequivocal recommendation to “get these speakers,” alongside Audiophilepure's similarly enthusiastic verdict, reflects a view that their sound and appearance make a persuasive package at the price. Ecoustics also found the imaging unusually accomplished for speakers in this market segment.
