What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 92/100
Reviewers found the Vela FS 407 notably smooth, open and detailed, with an especially accomplished treble and a coherent, clean midband. It produces tight, even bass and a spacious, well-focused presentation, although it is less convincing when asked for full-scale low-frequency slam at very high levels.
Bass
91/100
Hi-Fi News describes the bass as tight, extended, neutral and even, with the ability to carry deep basslines with heft while avoiding bloom, slur and bloat. Its limits emerge with the largest-scale material: the reviewer notes that the mid-sized cabinet can move only a finite amount of air.
Mid
94/100
The midband is described as clean, refined and precisely detailed, with realistically exposed instrumental timbres. Hi-Fi News also found the transition into the tweeter seamless, without a lumpy or hard character through the crossover region.
Treble
96/100
Hi-Fi News calls the high-frequency performance exceptional, praising its smoothness, transient speed and ability to flatter a wide variety of music. The tweeter is presented as a major strength, combining openness and refinement without sacrificing integration with the midrange.
Soundstage Imaging
93/100
The speaker delivered a panoramic concert-hall perspective, with generous space around the orchestra, clear instrumental locations and surprisingly convincing depth. A few degrees of toe-in were found to help it achieve its best stereo imaging.
Dynamics
86/100
Audiophilepure characterises the ELAC as fast, agile and engaging across a broad range of music, while Hi-Fi News heard good dexterity with bass-driven material. At higher volumes and on powerful crescendos involving low instruments, however, it could sound somewhat compressed, breathless and short of punch.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
92/100
The cabinet earns praise as handsome and sturdy, with a convex baffle, alloy base section and die-cast plinth that provides impressive stability. Details including the down-firing port arrangement and magnetically attached fabric grille contribute to a classy, thoughtfully executed appearance.
Value for Money
89/100
At £3,670, Hi-Fi News considered the FS 407 a highly capable all-rounder able to give similarly priced rivals a seriously hard time. Audiophilepure likewise placed it among the best of its contemporaries, though the review also makes clear that its compact proportions impose some ultimate large-scale dynamic limits.
