The Opticon 1 MK2 pairs low-colouration clarity with the poise of a finely engineered compact monitor. Its 29mm soft-dome tweeter promises smooth, extended treble, while the Dual Flare port and wood-fibre driver support controlled bass beyond its size. As ecoustics details, carefully upgraded drivers, cabinet and crossover design underpin its focused imaging and coherent musical presentation.
Pros
SMC motor technology is designed to reduce harmonic distortion, low-level detail masking and coloration.
The larger 29mm soft-dome tweeter offers lower distortion, higher power handling and lower-frequency operation than the previous design.
Rigid cabinet construction and a 25mm front baffle are engineered to minimise panel resonance and coloration.
Dual Flare reflex port design is intended to minimise airflow turbulence and maintain effective low-frequency output at higher volumes.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 88/100
Bass
87/100
Spec sheet shows a 4.75" low-frequency driver and a stated low-frequency limit of 62 Hz (+/-3 dB) — unusually deep extension for a small bookshelf. Expect controlled, musical bass that outperforms many speakers with similar driver diameters; sensitivity (85 dB) and 4 Ω nominal impedance mean a competent amp is needed for best control.
Mid
90/100
29 mm soft-dome tweeter and careful 2-way crossover at 3 kHz indicate focus on natural, well-rendered midrange. DALI's design intent for coherent driver integration supports strong timbral accuracy and vocal presence.
Treble
88/100
Tweeter spec to 25 kHz and soft-dome topology point to extended, smooth high end with low risk of harshness. Expect good detail retrieval and air without sibilance when properly partnered with an appropriate amp.
Soundstage Imaging
90/100
Two-way topology, small-format mid/bass and soft-dome tweeter with a 3 kHz crossover typically yield focused imaging and a generous sense of width and depth for the form factor. Cabinet and driver integration on paper supports stable, well-defined images.
Dynamics
83/100
105 dB max SPL and recommended amp power of 25–100 W provide good headroom, but 85 dB sensitivity and 4 Ω impedance make the speaker amplifier-dependent — top dynamics require a capable partner.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
88/100
DALI's Opticon line has historically used solid cabinetry and quality driver assemblies; the provided crossover frequency and driver specs imply careful engineering and finish standards consistent with the brand's mid-premium positioning.
Features Connectivity
80/100
Passive single-post bookshelf baseline applied. No additional connectivity or DSP is expected or penalized for a passive speaker.
Value for Money
75/100
Price listed at 1400 (unspecified currency) positions the speaker in a premium bracket for a bookshelf. Strong performance and build justify a healthy portion of the price, but the cost and need for a capable amp reduce the relative value versus less expensive competitors.

Manufacturer's Description — Dali
Patented SMC
Our patented SMC magnet motor minimises hysteresis to significantly reduce electro-acoustic distortion
Reflex Ports
The OPTICON MK2 dual-flare reflex ports minimise turbulence and effectively reinforce low-frequency performance
Assembled by Hand
DALI stereo pairs are built and tested by one technician using components from the same batch to ensure visual and acoustic matching
Made in Denmark
At our Danish production facilities, we hand-assemble, test and QA everything from cutting the laminate to surface finishing
HIGH-PERFORMANCE AUDIO
A true 2-way compact performer
The OPTICON 1 MK2 builds on the impressive MK1 series to create a true 2-way compact performer. Designed for small to medium-sized rooms, this high-performance bookshelf speaker includes our signature wood fibre cone and patented low-loss SMC magnet system, delivering low distortion, minimal colouration and high power handling. The OPTICON 1 MK2 is fully assembled at our production facilities in Denmark using components produced in-house or sourced from the best local specialist manufacturers and further afield.
REFLEX-LOADED SPEAKER
Port design in the realm of aerodynamics
As a reflex-loaded speaker, the OPTICON 1 MK2 channels unused acoustic output generated by the woofer to extend low-frequency bandwidth and increase power handling. Using a dual flare shape that minimises turbulence at the entry and exit flares, the OPTICON 1 MK2 brings port design into the realm of aerodynamics.
PATENTED SMC
Reducing distortion with SMC
The OPTICON 1 MK2 driver magnet system consists of a large ferrite ring magnet surrounding a pole piece manufactured entirely of the unique DALI SMC (Soft Magnetic Composite) material. The use of SMC greatly reduces mechanical distortion caused by hysteresis and eddy currents, resulting in a drastic reduction in third-order distortion for extended listening pleasure, a relaxed midrange and a surprising amount of detailing.
LIGHTWEIGHT SOFT DOME
Oversized tweeter for better performance
The lightweight 29 mm soft dome tweeter is derived from our CALLISTO C series and offers significant advances over the tweeters used in the OPTICON MK1 series. The relatively small increase in diameter over the previous 28 mm tweeter results in lower distortion, higher power handling and extended low-frequency response. The 29 mm tweeter is also used throughout the OPTICON MK2 series for consistent tonal character and dispersion characteristics, for example in a multichannel surround setup.
WOOD FIBRE WOOFER
Low loss, distortion and low colouration
The 4¾" OPTICON 1 MK2 bass/midrange driver has been designed according to our sound design principles of low loss, low distortion and low colouration. The ideal driver plays only what the amplifier supplies... nothing is added, nothing is taken away. Every OPTICON 1 MK2 component is carefully designed to contribute towards this goal, including the paper pulp and wood fibre cone, which ensures minimal break-up resonance for a high resolution midrange and precise, coherent bass.
MANUFACTURED IN DENMARK
Ensuring the highest quality products
With a 25 mm thick front baffle and extra internal bracing, the OPTICON 1 MK2 cabinet is extremely rigid and practically eliminates panel resonance. To ensure the best possible quality product, we manufacture and test OPTICON MK2 series speakers at our production facilities in central Denmark, carrying out everything from cutting and routing of the wood laminate panels to installing the drivers and crossover.
