The VM760SLC brings vinyl into razor-sharp focus with exceptional detail retrieval, neutral transparency and a wide, precisely imaged soundstage. Peter Familari found this premium moving-magnet design digs deeper into bass, reaches higher in treble and cleanly separates dense instrumental and vocal passages. Its assured tracking and elegant, finely built construction make it a serious high-end MM contender.

Pros

Extracts exceptional low-level detail, separating individual voices and instruments within dense harmonies.

Delivers transparent, neutral sound with deeper bass, more extended treble, an expansive midrange and a wide, defined soundstage.

Tracks demanding vocal passages cleanly at under 2g, avoiding distortion during climactic moments.

Premium construction and brown-and-gold finish were praised as exceptionally well executed.

Cons

Dynamic attack and heft trail the Decca Maroon and Denon DL103R comparisons.

The line-contact stylus rewards careful alignment and appropriate capacitive loading, making setup less plug-and-play than a basic elliptical cartridge.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"the VM540ML/H behaved like the complete moving magnet cartridge."

— StereoNET United Kingdom — Peter Familari

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 94/100

The review portrays the VM760SLC as notably transparent, neutral and richly informative, with deep bass, extended treble and an expansive midrange. Its ability to separate individual voices and instruments is paired with a large, sharply defined spatial presentation.

Overall Sound

95/100

StereoNET calls out an added degree of “subliminal detail, transparency and neutrality,” while finding the VM760SLC more expansive through the midrange, deeper in bass and more extended in treble than its less costly comparison. The presentation is described as elegant rather than merely analytical, combining broad bandwidth with musical clarity.

Tracking Retrieval

93/100

The special line-contact stylus is supported by strong listening evidence: the reviewer says the cartridge was in “a class of its own” for detail retrieval and could disentangle individual voices and instruments from dense harmonies. It also tracked demanding material below two grams with apparent ease, although the review does not separately discuss inner-groove performance or record-noise suppression.

Soundstage Imaging

94/100

The VM760SLC is described as sure-footed in locating separate vocals and instruments across a very wide soundstage. StereoNET also reports greater separation, a more defined image and a larger stage than the comparison cartridge.

FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 89/100

Tonearm compatibility / system fit.

Tonearm Compatibility

89/100

The standard half-inch mount, 4.0mV output and 1.8–2.2g tracking-force range make this a comparatively straightforward cartridge to accommodate in a conventional MM phono setup. Its line-contact stylus rewards careful alignment and appropriate capacitive loading, so it is less plug-and-play than a basic elliptical design.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

95/100

StereoNET describes the VM760SLC as “stunningly well built” and praises its brown-and-gold finish as simply gorgeous. Its nude special line-contact stylus and tapered aluminum cantilever support the impression of a carefully executed premium moving-magnet design.

Value for Money

85/100

The review clearly finds the VM760SLC’s performance commensurate with its stated $1,199 price, particularly its resolution, transparency and imaging gains over less expensive Audio-Technica models. However, it does not make a direct claim that this particular model is a class-leading bargain, and its strongest value praise is directed toward cheaper cartridges in the range.

VM760SLC

The VM760SLC special line contact stylus cartridge is the flagship model in Audio-Technica’s new VM cartridge line – a line that harks back to A-T’s early days as a manufacturer primarily of high-end phono cartridges, while also incorporating today’s advanced technology. Like all VM cartridges, the VM760SLC is equipped with dual magnets that are positioned to match the left and right channels in the stereo record groove for outstanding channel separation and extended frequency response. The cartridge’s ultra-lightweight special line contact stylus allows it to trace the record groove with incredible accuracy and minimum abrasion, resulting in nuanced audio reproduction, low distortion and low record wear. Includes mounting hardware.
