The AT-OC9XSH brings vinyl alive with striking clarity, taut bass and expansive, precisely layered imaging. Its Shibata stylus and boron cantilever retrieve delicate decays, ride imperfect records calmly and unleash dynamic swings without glare. HiFi News and Positive Feedback found a remarkably refined, versatile moving-coil performer with exceptional engineering for the money.
Pros
Exceptional clarity, fine detail retrieval and clean, low-noise tracking, even on less-than-perfect records.
Wide, three-dimensional soundstage with sharply defined images, convincing vocal projection and strong separation.
Expressive dynamics and solid, controlled bass deliver impact without harshness.
Premium Shibata, boron, neodymium and aluminium construction represents outstanding moving-coil value.
Cons
Its lively, brighter tonal balance may sound too forthright in systems that already lean bright.
Soundstage depth can occasionally reveal a slight gap between the foreground and background.
As a low-output moving-coil design, it requires a capable MC phono stage and careful loading.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 93/100
The AT-OC9XSH is described as a highly revealing, dynamic and versatile performer, combining vivid clarity with substantial bass weight and a low apparent noise floor. Its spacious presentation is especially strong, although one review occasionally noticed a small gap at the centre of the stage.
Overall Sound
93/100
Positive Feedback found it accomplished and enjoyable across every genre, capable of sounding “velvety smooth” as well as thunderously powerful. HiFi News heard a somewhat bright but cleaner-than-previous tonal balance, with striking clarity, spectacular insight, taut bass and impressive dynamic range; very bright systems may still find it forthright.
Tracking Retrieval
94/100
Reviewers praise its precision on fast, intricate material and its ability to reveal delicate decays and subtle recording shadings. The cartridge is also reported to handle demanding dynamic attacks without harshness, while remaining notably tolerant of surface noise, dust and less-than-perfect records.
Soundstage Imaging
92/100
It creates a broad, three-dimensional stage with sharply defined instrumental positions, convincing vocal projection and strong separation of complex vocal groups. HiFi News found it could fill the space between the speakers convincingly, though it occasionally heard a slight hole in the centre image.
FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 83/100
Tonearm compatibility / system fit.
Tonearm Compatibility
83/100
Its standard half-inch mounting, threaded body, 7.6g mass and moderate compliance should make physical matching practical with many suitable tonearms. As a 0.4mV low-output moving-coil design, however, it requires a capable MC phono stage or step-up arrangement and careful loading, so it is less plug-and-play than a moving-magnet cartridge.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
91/100
The OC9XSH combines a nude boron cantilever and Shibata stylus with PCOCC coil wire, neodymium magnets and a milled aluminium body. Positive Feedback specifically highlights the unusually ambitious engineering and materials package at its price, though the reviews say little about long-term durability.
Value for Money
95/100
At roughly $649, Positive Feedback calls it the “best deal in the world of analog,” arguing that competing cartridges do not offer the same combination of a boron cantilever, Shibata stylus, premium coil wire, neodymium magnets and milled aluminium body at this price. HiFi News likewise describes its clarity, detail and dynamic capability as rare among contemporaries in its price class.

Manufacturer's Description — Audio-Technica
AT-OC9XSH
The AT-OC9XSH Dual Moving Coil cartridge with Shibata stylus is designed to provide outstanding channel separation. The Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting (PCOCC) coils ensure pure audio transmission and are aligned in a reverse V-shaped formation to exert less pressure on the stylus, thereby minimizing distortion.
Audio quality is further enhanced by a rigid aluminum body that reduces resonance, a neodymium magnet and premium permendur yoke that increase the magnetic energy, and the nude Shibata stylus on a boron cantilever that tracks the record groove with incredible accuracy, delivering rich, full-range audio and high transient response. The cartridge body has been pre-threaded, enabling it to be mounted to a headshell or integral tonearm with just two screws – no nuts required.
Please Note: AT-OC9XSH’s stylus assembly is not field-replaceable, but Audio-Technica offers a fee-based Moving Coil Exchange Program to properly service your moving coil cartridge.
